Sweet, Sweet Air Conditioning

Today has been hot. Actually, it has been hot for the past few days up here in Da ‘Burgh. And it is still only Spring. (Or is it now Sprummer?)

After a hot, energy-sapping morning in the ministry (but with a pick-me-up in the form of a Peach Pizazz Smoothie,) the afternoon’s project was to get the last of three window air-conditioners installed, this one downstairs.

Lydia fired up the grill to prepare a Binghamton, NY delicacy called Spiedies (the link has more information) while I brought the 12,000 BTU box of sweet coolness down from the second floor.

There are not many choices for windows in which to install the unit downstairs—just two. And between them there is a clear favorite. That part of the project was easy. We cleaned the windows, which needed it, removed the screen, and blocked the bottom sill. The unit is fairly heavy—too heavy for one person to lift into place. But, with Lydia’s help, it was up and in. Perfect fit.

We had been worried about a suitable outlet for the big guy, but we found one after swapping with our phone’s base station. We have lots of outlets in the kitchen and that’s a good thing.

By the time the chicken Spiedies were grilled to yummy goodness, we were basking in the wonderful blast of man-made coldness.

Now, what was that you were saying about a nap?

  1. Lucky you. There is one AC in my house, in the bedroom. Downstairs I rely on fans, sitting still and lots of cold drinks. Friends and family keep suggesting I get a big unit for the downstairs but I don’t have a suitable window (out of the sun, near an outlet). So I do like the natives in hot climates.

  2. I think I would die without our central air. It has actually been cooler here, so far this year. But the air is on now, and has been for a few weeks. I think we use it more to keep the humidity down rather than to keep cool.
Glad you two have the window units up, and working. The spiedies sound great! I checked the link, thinking there might have been a recipe there. LOL Guess I’ll do a search later. The peach smoothie sounds good, too. Good thing it’s almost dinner time! This talk of food has made me hungry.
