Puff, If You Want To

We met someone in the ministry on Saturday whose name was Onalee. It reminded us of the Peter, Paul and Mary song, Puff, the Magic Dragon. Remember? He was from the land of Honalei (or Honah Lee.) At the time, I had mentioned that the song was about drug use. Since then, however, I have changed my mind.

The writers of the song (and the poem the song was based on) have continuously and strenuously denied that the song has any meaning beyond the obvious: The sad loss of childhood innocence. I am inclined to believe them.

“I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids.”
Leonard Lipton (co-writer)

“It’s easier to interpret “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a drug song than “Puff, the Magic Dragon.” What kind of a meanspirited SOB would write a children’s song with a covert drug message?”
Peter Yarrow (co-writer)

Yea! An innocent childhood treasure saved from the fire. So, sing it with me folks.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff’s gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene’er they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when Puff roared out his name. Oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh

(softly)Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

(loudly)Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Reminiscing about our trip to Paris

I have been reminiscing about our October, 2005 trip to Paris. That was over a year and a half ago. Both Lydia and I blogged about the trip and we took lots of pictures. If you’d like to revisit our trip, too, you can follow along at these links:

The blogs are very complementary. Throughout the trip, as we each wrote in our journals our memories and observations of the day, I made sure not to read what Lydia had written. However, sometimes I would ask her questions like, “Where did we have lunch yesterday?” or “What did we do after the Louvre?” That is because my memory has become somewhat fragmented.

I am having fun reliving the experience through our blogs and pictures. You may find it interesting, as I do, that, even though we saw and heard the same things and even discussed those things with each other, we each took away our own perspective.

This slide show of Paris may not hold much appeal for you if you have never been. Then again, it may inspire you to make the trip one day.

02/Jun/2007 – Sweet, Sweet Air Conditioning   2 comments

Sweet, Sweet Air Conditioning

Today has been hot. Actually, it has been hot for the past few days up here in Da ‘Burgh. And it is still only Spring. (Or is it now Sprummer?)

After a hot, energy-sapping morning in the ministry (but with a pick-me-up in the form of a Peach Pizazz Smoothie,) the afternoon’s project was to get the last of three window air-conditioners installed, this one downstairs.

Lydia fired up the grill to prepare a Binghamton, NY delicacy called Spiedies (the link has more information) while I brought the 12,000 BTU box of sweet coolness down from the second floor.

There are not many choices for windows in which to install the unit downstairs—just two. And between them there is a clear favorite. That part of the project was easy. We cleaned the windows, which needed it, removed the screen, and blocked the bottom sill. The unit is fairly heavy—too heavy for one person to lift into place. But, with Lydia’s help, it was up and in. Perfect fit.

We had been worried about a suitable outlet for the big guy, but we found one after swapping with our phone’s base station. We have lots of outlets in the kitchen and that’s a good thing.

By the time the chicken Spiedies were grilled to yummy goodness, we were basking in the wonderful blast of man-made coldness.

Now, what was that you were saying about a nap?
